The Privacy Amendment (Notifiable Data Breaches) Bill 2016 came into effect in 2018
The aim is to incentivise holders of data to adequately secure or dispose of that information. It also provides greater powers to individuals whose personal information has been compromised by a breach to take remedial steps to lessen any adverse impact.
The European Union implemented the General Data Protection Regulation in 2018 which has extended jurisdiction to all companies processing the personal data of individuals residing in the Union, regardless of that company's location.
