Privacy Awareness Week - Building and maintaining trust
Privacy Awareness Week provides an opportunity for all businesses and individuals to consider how personal information is used to engage with business, government, and each other online. In recent conversations with cybersecurity analysts, the key focus in everything we do is building and maintaining people’s trust in the handling of personal information.
APSCo Australia has always focussed its Members attention on the key privacy principles of transparency and accountability for the management of the personal data they store on behalf of candidates and clients.
In the past two months we have delivered a range of resources and presentations to individuals, to companies and to Government to demonstrate our commitment to the importance of quality privacy management in our Association Members.
We have focussed on the Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) scheme that came into force in February, which ensures organisations notify individuals affected by data breaches that are likely to result in serious harm. We are also working with our APSCo UK colleagues to ensure that all Australian businesses operating in the EU have tools and resources to manage their compliance as the European Union’s (EU’s) General Data Protection Regulation takes effect later this month.
The theme for 2018’s Privacy Week is From principles to practice and this is exactly the approach APSCo Australia believes is essential to support the businesses of our Members and their clients in all areas of legislation.
Cybersecurity is the buzz word, and essentially so, but going back to basics and reviewing and improving how personal information is handled to manage potential privacy risks in an ever increasing data driven world, is integral.
So, during this Privacy Awareness Week, APSCo’s call to action is to remind all Members to access and use all the resources we have available to take stock of how your company manages personal information and to ensure everyone is committed to improving privacy practices.
